What is Cacao?

From its sacred origins in the Maya and Aztec civilizations, where it was consumed as a ritual beverage called “xocolatl” and even used as currency, cacao began a transformative journey after the Spanish conquest. Brought to Europe in the 16th century, its bitter taste was sweetened with sugar and spices, captivating the aristocracy and giving rise to the first chocolate houses. The Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, with inventions like the cocoa press and the creation of the solid chocolate bar, ultimately democratized its consumption, transforming the ancient “food of the gods” into the accessible, global chocolate we know today.
